As we are in the midst of CPR AND AED AWARENESS WEEK, know that you can easily learn how to safe a life.
It is common to see AED’S in the workplace. They are clearly marked and typically showcased in an alarmed cabinet. But do you know what to do with it if someone has sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)?
While you yell out for someone to call 911, you need to come to the aid of the person on the floor. EMS will take some time to arrive, but every second counts. Knowing how to recognize the signs of cardiac arrest and knowing what to do can be a game changer.
Cardiac Arrest vs. Heart Attack
Cardiac Arrest: Your heart beats at a steady pace and underlying conditions such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure can complicate your electrical system that keeps your heart regulated. An electrical failure can cause your heart to be irregularly or what is referred to as arrhythmia. One may lose consciousness, collapse and may have no pulse. The heart stops beating and it can no longer pump blood to the brain and other organs.
Heart Attack: It typically caused by a blockage and making it difficult for blood to circulate to all the vital organs. One may experience symptoms for hours or even weeks leading up to an event. They may have stomach and chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea and chest pain.
Cardiac Arrest will come with little or no warning. They will lose consciousness quickly due to lack of blood flow to the brain. CPR can raise the survival rate greatly to help to circulate blood and oxygen. A shock from an AED will help to reset the hearts electrical system.
